Kids in the Kitchen

Kitchen Playdates by Lauren Bank Deen from Chronicle Books
The impending long and dark winter has had me thinking about ways to reinvent some of the daily routine with my kiddo.  Cooking up a storm in the kitchen sounds like fun for both of us; plus, it's just so practical--we've got to eat!  So far, he really is a great help in the kitchen, especially when he's excited about what were making or if he gets to use neat "tools" like whisks and cookie cutters.

I think this book, Kitchen Playdates by Lauren Bank Deen, could add to my repertoire of kids-in-the-kitchen recipes and give me some good ideas for keeping my little guy occupied in the kitchen.  It's currently out of stock at Chronicle Books, but is available at Amazon for $8.99.

Another kids-in-the-kitchen cookbook that has caught my eye is Kids in the Holiday Kitchen by Jessica Strand and Tammy Massman-Johnson.  The concept behind this book is great--kids cooking combined with holiday giving and togetherness!  Great for the upcoming holiday season!

Cook It in a Cup! by Julia Myall looks like a ton of fun as well!  I love the idea of making "mini-meals" in cups and I think my kiddo would definitely enjoy making an individual meal and/or treat that is just for him.

Also, here are a few recipes that I would like to make soon with and for my kiddo.

Mmmm. Making Gnocchi with Kids from Momtastic.

This is a great pictorial and a fun recipe to try with kids.  I can't wait to make some gnocchi.

Almost certain my picky kiddo will try these Tofu Fries from Momtastic!
These are sure to be hit in my house!

These look cool for kids and tasty for all ages! -Easy Baked Apples from Babble
I've never made these, but have always enjoyed my mother-in-law's baked apples.  I these would be a great week-night dessert!

Power Muffins

the30girl's Power Muffins

You may have noticed my affinity for muffins in posts here, here and here.  These muffins are delectable anytime of the day, but are truly a great "get up and going" breakfast muffin that will satisfy any sweet tooth.  In a cooking frenzy on Friday evening, I literally came up with these babies on a whim with the goal of using 2 bananas that were getting too ripe.

Here's the recipe breakdown:

1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup quick-cooking oats
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 c chopped walnuts
2 large mashed bananas (seriously ripe ones)
1/2 c vegetable/canola oil
1/2 c applesauce (unsweetened)
1/2 c packed brown sugar
1 egg, beaten
1/2 c shredded coconut (or more to your liking)
1/2 c 60% cacao chocolate chips (or more to your liking)

1. Whisk together the first 6 ingredients in a medium sized bowl.
2. In a larger bowl, mix together the banana, oil, applesauce, brown sugar, and egg.
3. Add the dry ingredients to the banana mixture and stir until just mixed.  Add the coconut and chocolate chips.
4. Spray your muffin tin with cooking spray and fill each cup 3/4 full (I fill mine a little fuller and make 11 muffins instead of 12).  Bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean and tops of the muffins bounce back when patted.

It's Monday morning and I can honestly say that there are only two muffins left.  Clearly, I have been eating them more frequently than breakfast.  Oops.

I hope this recipe inspires you to make some Power Muffins.

Happy Monday!

Before and After: Master Bedroom Makeover

Since we moved into our home about 2.5 years ago, we have made a lot of small changes.  "We" is a loose term here; since, my husband is the one who has done most (if not all) of the hard labor while I work as Project Lead.  We've painted or had painted every room in the house, literally.  This includes ceilings, trim and doors.  We're anal and love the clean look of fresh paint.  We've also changed nearly every light fixture and all of the switch/outlets from beige to white.  We're working on changing the door handles and hinges from brass to brushed nickel (I even spray painted a couple here)...my husband is doing this work as he paints each door.  These are small, time consuming changes, but with big impact and small budget.  While we would love to replace the carpet with hardwood and gut the kitchen and bathrooms, this house, this location and this economy just do not warrant the expense.  So, we're working on small changes with big results.

For example, I've been slowly pulling together our master bedroom on a shoestring budget.

Before:
This is what the room looked like when we moved in, sans the wall decor.

After:
This is what the room looks like now.  Well, this is only half of the room.  If I would turn around and take a picture, the other half would not look so pulled together.  I'm still working on that half.  We were tossing around the idea of getting a television for the space, but we decided against it recently.   So, I'm ready to tackle the "back half"!

Breakdown:
Canvas
16 x 16 from Canvas People,
click here for your free 8x10 or to put $55 toward the size of your choice.  I paid around $40 (including shipping) for a canvas that would normally cost double that amount.
Initial "Quote" Frames
These are from A Few Kind Words, an etsy shop with a truly personal touch and keen attention to detail.  The customer service I received was excellent and they truly offered the exact product I was looking for. The quotes are cheesy, but meaningful for my husband and I.
K-Keep true to the dreams of thy heart. -Friedrich von Schiller
S-Shall we make a new rule of life, from tonight always try to be a little kinder than necessary. -Unknown
Keep in mind that they will customize the prints to any size, initial and quote that you'd like!
"Headboard"
The headboard consists of 4 vintage shutters that I purchased for $15 each.  Originally, they looked like this.
I sanded, painted and glazed them.  My husband attached each pair together with brackets and mounted them to the wall.  I know it's a bit non-traditional for a headboard, but I love the cottage-y look it gives our bedroom.  I also love that I have a vintage, upcycled, handmade headboard for about $70!

Now they look like this:
Lamps:
See lamp makeover here.
Bedding
Martha Stewart from Macy's that I purchased a couple of years ago on sale.  I love the bright green and damask; however, I really love that it holds up to all our toddler wear and tear...jumping, potty leaks, greasy hands.
Settee
Gift from my in-laws and cover was made by a local seamstress for a song!
Settee Pillows
Liberty of London from Target-I purchased them on super clearance for $4.98. Still available on Target's website for $11.88, which is still a good price in my opinion.
Right-Side Night Stand
Purchased from Home Goods on clearance for $104.  I love that I could use this table for a variety of purposes and I love the rustic, manly look.
Left-Side Night Stand
My splurge.  Purchased from Home Goods for $199.  It has a pull-out writing desk, four drawers, and I LOVE the color in this room.  I feel like the turquoise is a great accent color in this space and really adds to the happy, restful feeling.
*I'm still working on window treatments.  I haven't been able to decide yet.  I will probably go with long white panels...but not sure if I want shear, canvas, print or ????*

What do you think?  Have you made any small changes=big impact makeovers lately?  If so, please share I'd love to hear some inspiration!
More detailed pictures after the jump...

Around the House: Leaves

Perhaps it comes from growing up in a forest, but I love leaves.  The crunch they make under your feet, the smell they have after a fresh rain and the way they scatter in the wind, brings back fond childhood memories.
Here are a few items that will put leaves inside your home this season.

1. leaf ornaments, $4.00
7. leaf dish, $14.00

Transportation Quiet Play Mat

Recently, I made this "quiet play" mat for my friend's son's 2nd birthday.  I made the mat using the same technique that I used to make my kiddo's Halloween Felt Play Mat.  I wanted to make something that could be stored in a purse and/or diaper bag for use at a restaurant, church, doctor's office, etc.  Each vehicle has a matching "surface", but they can be used for any quiet pretend play that this little guy desires.  In addition, I included the letters of his name for a quick learning opportunity.

If you'd like to make your own, here are the patterns I used for my vehicles (just click on the image, print, cut out on cardstock, and use as stencils).  Of course, you may be a much better artist than me and want to draw your own!
